In the June/July 2026 issue of American Music Teacher, Jenny Jieun Park published a column titled, “The Science of Piano Sight-Reading: Practical Applications for Teachers.” Having just concluded a year of specific piano sight-reading focus with our practice incentive theme, Cracking the Crystal Code, I was especially interested to read this article. After sharing highlights from various studies and research, Jenny distills the information down to Six Actionable Strategies for Teaching Sight-Reading:
- Incorporate daily sight-reading into lessons.
- Emphasize maintaining a steady tempo.
- Develop chunking and pattern recognition skills.
- Encourage collaborative music-making.
- Utilize technology for sight-reading practice.
- Develop positive attitudes toward sight-reading.
I’m thrilled that almost all of these are areas that we focused on in our practice incentive, and I can attest anecdotally to their effectiveness. The one that we didn’t specifically incorporate is number 3 – Develop chunking and pattern recognition skills. This was more the focus of The Puzzlemaker practice incentive theme, and I’m also including it as a main objective in this upcoming year’s practice incentive theme (to be announced soon!).
In the meantime, if you’re looking for a fun way to engage your students all year long and incorporate these strategies to help them develop better piano sight-reading skills don’t forget to enter to win the free giveaway of the Cracking the Crystal Code practice incentive theme package by Friday, July 24.
