Since our piano practice incentive theme this year (Cracking the Crystal Code) is focused on building sightreading skills, one of the ways students can earn extra steps in the Enthusiastic Exploration cave is by completing various worksheets. More than one of my students completed all their worksheets within the first month of lessons, so I’ve been scouring the internet for other effective worksheets to give them. Not sure how I never came across this site before, but the Mad Minute Music design-your-own music note identification worksheet is A.M.A.Z.I.N.G!
Incredibly simple to use, you just select your clef, input the range of notes you want to include, adjust the layout, then select how many sharps and/or flats you want to include. Name the worksheet and click “Create Worksheet” and voila! it’s ready to download and print. I can easily create worksheets that correspond to the flashcard levels, for example, here’s one for the bass clef that includes all staff and ledger line notes:
Students or parents could easily create and print their own as well. I’ve already created a handful of worksheets and I know I’ll be back often for more!

This is fantastic timing! I’m always looking for ways to make sight-reading practice more engaging than just handing out standard flashcards. Focusing the worksheet completion on an incentive theme like “Cracking the Crystal Code” is such a clever way to motivate students who finish quickly. Do you find the customization aspect saves you significant prep time compared to finding pre-made resources online?

Oh yes, I think it saves quite a bit of time and makes it more consistent for the students as well!
