To the Isle with Powell and His Dragons – Piano Camp Day 4

June 14, 2026 by natalie Leave a Comment

Due to the technical issues I mentioned in the Piano Camp Day 3 post, there will be a quick succession of the remaining posts for piano camp week, trying to play catch-up. Here are the highlights from Day 4 of To the Isle with Powell and His Dragons:

The students loved using a xylophone for our Welcome to Piano Camp song today!

For one of our songs this week we circle up like a community of dragons and pass a colorful rooster while singing, “Let’s put the rooster in the stew.” Sometimes instead of passing, I selected one student to hold the rooster and watch everyone else to see who was singing well and then let them pass the rooster to that singer. They enjoyed that version as well!

We had to make a few adjustments to the younger group for our rhythm cup tapping choreography, and they had such a fun time following along and trying to stay on beat!

Lovely creative music came from our older group when they had the chance to improvise on the xylophone during our Welcome to Piano Camp song.

D-Harmonic 5ths was the piano theory focus of the day, and for this activity Lainey played a rhythmic pattern on the xylophone and they all had to echo at their keyboards.

One of the things I especially loved about this older group of all girls is their creative minds. They contributed all kinds of ideas that we incorporated into our activities for the week. At one point when we rehearsed the rhythm cup tapping choreography today, they nailed it and I asked what had made the difference so that they got it so in sync. One girl quickly responded, “We just watched your bun bobbing!” So they insisted that I wear my hair in a bun tomorrow so that they could achieve the same result at the end-of-camp performance for the parents. So funny!

For today’s Dragon Training Exercise each team had to accurately place D-Harmonic 5ths across the entire piano keyboard.

Hard to believe we just have one day left tomorrow!
