Piano Camp Day 1 – To the Isle with Powell and His Dragons

June 8, 2026 by natalie Leave a Comment

It’s here! Our much-anticipated week of piano camp has arrived. This is one of my favorite activities of the summer. All week long the studio will be full of life and energy as little bodies fill the space and experience the wild and wonderful world of music with our Piano Expeditions camp. This year: To the Isle with Powell and His Dragons! Here’s a quick photo recap of the day:

The first group is for 4-8 year olds and includes five returning students and seven brand new students. We started out learning about the basic topography of the piano with a focus on the two black keys.

We had three students to a team. This was the green dragon team (they named themselves “Storm Fly”) exploring the two black key groups at their piano.

The pink dragon team (they named themselves “104 Dragons”) worked hard to pass today’s dragon training exercise so they could earn their sticker toward receiving their official Dragon Trainer Certificate at the end of the week.

Storytime with my fabulous assistant, Miss Lainey, is always a favorite!

Group two was for 9-13 year-olds and we ended up with eight girls registered this year, seven of whom have participated before – so fun! The two-black key challenge gets bumped up to the next level for them as we attempt faster and faster speeds going up and down the keys.

We all loved listening to John Powell’s epic compositions for How to Train Your Dragon while coloring pictures in the student workbooks.

Our improv time today was creating a musical backdrop for our own imaginary isle. Some students chose to do solo improvs while others opted for a duet.

The story we are reading this week, My First Orchestra Book by Genevieve Helsby, has a companion app that is so much fun. The students enjoyed tapping images on the screen to access more information about each instrument.

What a delightful start to our piano camp. I had such a great time with all of these students and look forward to the rest of the week together!
