We had our studio party this week – the culmination of our Cracking the Crystal Code practice incentive theme. It was a gorgeous evening, so after the students spent all the crystals they wanted to on items from the studio store, we filled our plates with snacks and headed out to the back patio to play a game of Meter Maids. Several years ago, a piano teacher friend sent me this game that her son developed. I’ve intended to play it for a while, but finally got the chance this week!

Each player starts out with two cards and the goal is to accumulate as many points as you can by completing full measures in specific time signatures. Bar line cards and repeat cards help you maximize your points, and replacing rests in other players’ measures earns you Teamwork cards worth extra points. There is also an option to create 3 or 4-note chords based on the placement of the notes on the staff on your cards, but we found that we stuck just to the rhythmic component because it was easier to accumulate points that way. It was an engaging game that was accessible for all ages and levels. After one round, though, the younger ones ran off to expend their energy playing some version of tag while a few of my older students and I opted to play another round. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would recommend it! I’m always on the lookout for fun music-related games that work well for a variety of ages and levels, so this is a delightful addition to my stash. Do you have any favorites you and your students enjoy that you would recommend? I’d love to have some more suggestions to look into!
