Note from Natalie: Anyone who’s been around here a while knows that I love children’s books and I have a whole section of the Music Matters Blog website devoted to Music Books for Kids. So I was especially thrilled when author Heather Donovan contacted me about her new adorable children’s book about Gustav and his introduction to music notes! Can’t wait to read it for myself (and my students and granddaughters, of course!)!
Gustav’s Musical World is a children’s music education picture book designed to promote music note recognition on the staff to children and beginning musicians. It contains basic treble clef notes from middle C to the B above it.
The author, Heather Donovan, is a private piano and harp teacher and decided to write the book after hearing several students say that reading music is hard. She thought that if she could come up with a fun way to expose children to what the notes look like on the staff before they start lessons or music classes in school it might make it easier for them to learn to read music. Gustav’s Musical World is a fun picture book about the author’s dog, Gustav who points out notes on the staff that correspond to the letters in the story. It is a fun, humorous story that children and adults will enjoy.
Heather Donovan hopes that the reader will start to recognize the notes just by reading the story over and over as children tend to do. This book is perfect as a supplementary book for lessons, music classes, and homeschooling programs. The book is going to be a series in which more notes will be added to each book. A companion workbook is also in the works that will allow the reader to apply what they learned in the story to the workbook.
