Today we woke up to a stormy sky, so it’s a good thing this week’s games have all been adaptable to playing inside! Here’s a snapshot of our packed-full fourth day of piano camp:

Using the light-up glow sticks for one day of our welcome song at piano camp is always a must!

The younger class played a “Speedy Note” game and the older class version played a “Speedy Scale” game. Both were full of energy as students raced to place their game markers on the piano keyboard and be the first to ding the bell.

We’ve had lots of fun learning “Electric Slide” for our Dance-it! time each day. The swipe and turn move today is tricky to get the hang of, but these students sure seem determined to figure it out!

It’s always insightful to do improv duets with the students that incorporate whatever kind of musical scale we are focusing on for the day. I always ask them what mood they want their music to create, and there is such an array of responses. Today we learned about the major pentascale and one student chose a happy mood while the other wanted it to sound like a war (reminiscent of our listening the first day of Mars, bringer of war).

Our Pentascale Pop! game that was supposed to challenge students to remember the major pentascale pattern in order to piece together the pieces retrieved from inside their balloons proved extra challenging when they couldn’t figure out how to even get their balloons to pop! (Eventually a pair of scissors helped speed up the process…)

You would not believe the concentration and rhythmic accuracy of these students as they determinedly work to get this cup song down. Can’t wait to show you the video tomorrow!
As hard as it is to believe, we are down to just one more day of piano camp. We’ll be back tomorrow with the wrap-up.
