It’s here! After months of planning and preparing, today I welcomed 20+ enthusiastic students into the studio for our week of Piano Expeditions piano camp: To Outer Space with Holst and the Planets! I’ve started offering two different piano camps the same week, one for 4-8 year olds from 9:00-10:30 each morning, and one for ages 9 and up from 10:45-12:15. It makes for a very full morning, but we’ve got a good flow down and it works well for families who have students in both camp groups. I didn’t get many pictures today, but here’s just a small glimpse into the start of this adventure-packed week!

The first group enjoys coloring their pictures while we listen to Mars, the Bringer of War by Gustav Holst.

Storytime is always a favorite. This year we are reading Welcome to the Opera by Carolyn Sloan. I love this series and hope she has more in the works because after this year we’ll have read all of the ones published thus far. (I’m so grateful for my high school student, Lainey, who is helping out this week as my assistant!)

The older group caught on so quickly during our Sing-It! time. In keeping with our outer space theme, we are singing a song based on Psalm 19:1-4. And we’re also singing a 16th century Latin song that sounds especially gorgeous when sung in a round.

During the improv time, the students created their own sounds based on the Major Pentatonic scale that we learned about. Most of them opted to improvise as a duet with me, but David bravely decided to do a solo improv and it was lovely!

We wrapped up our time with a quick game of Pentatonic Imposter! that required the students to listen to a scale I played and determine if it was the Major Pentatonic we learned about or not. With that and a snack, they were off and will be back tomorrow for another day of music and fun!
