Several months ago I posted about the new PocketPiano – a digital piano that you can disassemble and fit in a backpack. Super cool! The only downside, of course, is that it’s digital. Apparently Lander Pinson feels that way, too. Drawing on his mechanical engineering background, this Danish innovator has built an acoustic piano that you can pack in your trunk and take on the go: The Keybird Portable Piano.
In order to accomplish this incredible feat, Pinson reduced the keyboard to 69 keys, thus requiring only 69 tuning pins and strings and keeping it to a width that will fit into a vehicle trunk. He says that the more manageable number of strings means that anyone can tune their own piano. Not sure I would trust myself to do that!
Several audio and video samples on the website capture the sound of the instrument, and it is quite lovely. I can think of all kinds of benefits of having a portable acoustic piano like this! Each Keybird Piano is made to order for $3,420 (plus extra for added options like felt and MIDI). And for $900 you can have one shipped from Denmark to your front door in the United States. Maybe someday I’ll save up and purchase one for my piano studio!
