In the process of going through and decluttering my music files, I came across folders full of various arrangements I’ve written for students over the years. They were inspired by specific students who had favorite pieces they wanted to play – often for our big Christmas recital – and/or combinations of students, levels, and instruments that needed a particular arrangement that we couldn’t find elsewhere. I’ll be adding some of these to the collection of sheet music in the Music Matters Blog store as I’m able to. Here’s the first one: O Holy Night
This is an equal parts piano duet of O Holy Night written at an early intermediate level. It paints an ethereal image of the night of Jesus’ birth through the use of chromatically moving harmonic 5ths at the beginning followed by broken 5ths in the accompaniment alternating between the primo and secondo throughout while the other part plays the melody. The piece fits easily in the hand and is perfect for older students or adults who want music that sounds mature and artistic, but is easy to learn and play.
