When I first began teaching piano over 20 years ago, one of the first books that landed on my shelf of must-have piano teaching reference material was Jane Magrath’s Pianist’s Guide to Standard Teaching and Performance Literature. It was my go-to as students moved into intermediate level playing and I wanted to be sure to give them repertoire at an appropriate level. My copy is well-worn now with lots of little flags and dog-eared pages.
I was thrilled to learn that Ms. Magrath has recently completed and is releasing a new book of the same sort (Piano Literature for Teaching & Performance) with the following features:
• Works from the Baroque through Contemporary periods.
• Listings from under represented and women composers.
• Newer works by living composers.
• Annotations with composer biographies, musical characteristics, and pedagogical considerations.
• Suggested grade levels from 1 through 10.
A preorder discount of 10% is available on the Clavier Companion website until November 15 by using the code: JANEPREORDER. The design is beautiful, and I’m sure the contents will be as invaluable as ever!
