Now that I’ve started offering preschool Piano Expeditions piano camps in the summer, I’m always on the lookout for games and activities that are well-suited to this age. I love to have some sort of simple activity to engage them right at the beginning while everyone is arriving, and this Toads, Tones, and Semitones game at Top Music Marketplace is perfect!
Obviously we use different terminology here in the U.S., but the great thing about this game is that it doesn’t matter because it is all visual! Students draw a card with an adorable pair of frogs, determine whether it is a half step or whole step, and then move accordingly (one lily pad forward for a half step; two for a whole step) on the game board. A few special elements along the way keep the game more interesting and fun. After a quick explanation, even very young piano students will get the hang of this and will easily be able to play it on their own, making it ideal to occupy early birds while I greet other students and parents as they arrive. I’ve got mine printed and ready to go and can hardly wait for this year’s To Russia with Mussorgsky and His Exhibition piano camp to give it a try!
