This is a simple game that trains the ear, is laid out visually, and engages the students in a tactile activity – so it incorporates three learning styles at once!
Each student needs a magnetic dry erase board and marker, some magnets, and a transparency sheet with a printed staff (or they could hand draw the staff). You can download a whole variety of free Music Manuscript Paper in the Music Matters Blog store. I printed the 2 Stave Landscape option on transparency sheets for this activity.
I had each student draw a treble and bass clef on their grand staff, then select five appropriately-sized magnets to fit within their staff lines. I specified a starting note and then played a simple melodic pattern for them to listen to. The students then arranged the magnets to correspond with the melody and held their board up so I could check it.
We’ve played this easy game with all ages and levels of students and it is always a hit. I would say it’s because they love improving their ear, but in all honesty it’s probably just because they love playing with the magnets. Oh well! As long as they’re learning while having fun, it’s a win-win, right?!
