As I mentioned several weeks ago in the I See the Pattern post, Claire has been working on learning and understanding key signatures. For the latest key signature activity, I had her roll a block with letter names to determine the name of a Major key, then had her place magnets and write the note names on a laminated version of the Free Scale Discovery Worksheet, then had her arrange the corresponding sharps or flats to represent the key signature using a handy Key Awareness Pizza Wheel Scale Finder that I picked up a couple of years ago at our state music teachers conference (it was one of those cool finds that’s been sitting in my closet and gathering dust, so I finally had to figure out a way to use it!).
Stephanie also enjoyed trying out this handy new key signature tool by seeing how quickly she could place the sharps and flats in the correct order. For her vocabulary the last several weeks she’s been memorizing the order of sharps and flats, so this was a great way to put that knowledge to the test!
I was reminded yet again how much students love having hands-on activities like this during their lessons. Not to mention that it does wonders to evaluate and reinforce their understanding of various musical concepts.
