When I was in a neighboring town a few weeks ago, I stopped in at a local coffee shop and was intrigued by the connected business called “The Clayworks.” I perused the attractive display of handmade items – notecards, pottery, ornaments, and more. In speaking with the friendly receptionist I discovered that they are a creative endeavor of our local Disability Supports organization, offering classes and entrepreneurial opportunities for adults with disabilities.
A handful of adults were busy creating in the adjoining workroom while I chatted with the receptionist and strolled through the displays. I was delighted to discover a clay ornament in the shape of a music note and snagged the remaining two as a reminder for a possible Christmas gift for my piano students in the future. Even better, the artists happily take orders for their work, so I can contact them before the next Christmas season with a request for a certain number of ornaments and even specify the colors. (They might even be willing to arrange shipping if it’s something you’re interested in for your students!) Each one was only $4, which seemed extremely reasonable for a handmade ornament. Thanks to funding from Disability Supports, the artists receive 100% of the proceeds of their sales. I’m excited about this unique gift find as well as the opportunity to support local artists who likely have very few other opportunities to earn their own money!
