This is an idea that has been percolating in my mind for a while, and I’m so excited to launch it this fall! In light of the realization that many of my students identify group classes as one of their favorite aspects of taking piano lessons and also knowing that many children thrive in the social setting provided via various activities, I am starting three beginning piano students as a group, which I’m dubbing Trio Class. We’re using Piano Safari and some other supplemental materials (which I’ll highlight in another post!), and the goal is for them to learn to play the piano well.
I know that there will be some adaptation required in terms of how I teach, in contrast to how I would in an individual private lesson, but I’m looking forward to seeing the benefits of the group dynamic as well. We’ll have opportunity to play games together and do other movement-based activities. Then there will be the built-in ensemble experience every week and the way this will encourage excellent rhythm fluency right off the bat.
All three of these students have participated in three years of our Piano Expeditions summer piano camps, so I know they have a basic framework of musical understanding, and all of them are eager to learn to play the piano. I’m looking forward to a fun adventure and will do my best to post updates along the way!
Stay tuned for the next highlight in the New-in-the-Studio-this-Fall series next week!

I’ve thought of trying something like this! Very interested to see how they progress. Good luck!
