For our practice incentive theme this year (The Aquarium Caper), we are emphasizing developing rhythm skills, so I’ve been searching for a variety of rhythm games to include in our monthly piano group classes that will continue to reinforce rhythm knowledge and skills. For our last group class, I came across the free Rollin Rhythms worksheet on Joy Morin’s Color in My Piano blog and thought it would be fun to utilize as a group activity.
Each student received a copy of the rhythm worksheet (which I placed in a sheet protector for easy re-use) and a dry erase marker. I used our new dry erase die and wrote a note value on each side.
We switched up the rules just a bit to make it more like a game for the group class. Each student took a turn rolling the die and then they could choose any row in which they wanted to place that note value, the only stipulation being that they had to add note values sequentially and couldn’t start the second measure of any row until the first one was completed. It was fun seeing how each of them strategized to determine where to place the rhythms they rolled and then watch them work hard counting out each measure to make sure they had the correct number of beats!

Thanks for sharing about how you used my Rollin’ Rhythms sheet, Natalie! I like the way you changed it to work for a group setting. 😀
