Organizing the Monster Collection of Music Flashcards

September 8, 2020 by natalie 3 Comments

It’s possible that I derive too much pleasure from organizing. My husband teases me for my affinity for containers and baskets and anything that contributes to organizational structures and systems. I know there are others of you out there like that! So I thought I would share the unexpected, perfect container I came across for organizing the complete set of printed music flashcards from the Monster Collection of Music Flashcards. I created this collection specifically to go with one aspect of this year’s practice incentive theme, so I’ve been trying to figure out the best way to organize all of them before we  started lessons for the fall. Tonight is our September Surprise! kickoff and we are officially ready to go!

I found this perfect 5 compartment drawer tray at Target in the kitchen section – a utensil organizer! Once the music flashcards were printed, cut, and folder, they fit perfectly, and a small piece of cardboard keeps each set separated from the others.

On top of that, the drawer tray fits perfectly in my sheet music cabinet next to the piano, so it will be easy to grab whichever set a student chooses to work on for the week and quickly have it ready to go for them.

I’m so excited to see everyone tonight, listen to the music they’ve been working on, announce our theme, and eat some fun themed snacks together. I hope your music teaching year is off to a great start as well!

Hi Natalie! Do you have any tips on how to assemble the printable cards? I think it would be too easy (at least for me) to make them all different sizes. Ideally I’d like to make them all the same size. Any shortcuts/tips would be appreciated!
Also do you tape them? Laminate?

Hi Michelle! Yes, if you are holding the paper in portrait, I recommend making a vertical cut at the 4.25” mark (in half lengthwise) and then horizontal cuts at 2.75”, 5.5”, and 8.25” so that you have a total now of 8 cards. Then fold each one in half lengthwise so that the answer is on the back side of the flashcard. You could cut them so that the flashcard and the answer are two separate cards if you wanted to use them for matching games, but I opted to keep the two attached for ease of use. I hope that makes sense! Let me know if you have any other questions!

Oh, and I didn’t laminate them since I printed them on card stock and went with the folding option for the cards.
