7 Ways to Support Your Child When Learning a New Instrument – A Guest Post by Skoove

July 7, 2020 by natalie Leave a Comment

Every parent wants to make the most of the natural talents, interests, and potential of their child. When they express an interest and passion for learning to play the piano, here are 7 ways you can support that newfound enthusiasm:

1.    Provide a Supportive Environment

Get ready for an adventure for both you and your child! Plus, what a great way to help your child make the most of this season of social distancing by learning to play a musical instrument. The good news is you can start with an inexpensive piano and lots of flexibility.

An automated app is the perfect complement to their pursuit, complete with necessary tools, professional guidance, and instructive techniques to learn to play a musical instrument like the piano. In addition to some kind of instruction, collect household items that will promote a successful experience – a proper height bench or stool at the piano, a tissue box or soft linen fabric to clean keys and hands after each practice session, a small water bottle, and as few distractions as possible!

2.    Teach Good Time Management

Good time management is foundational for quality practice, which is essential for progress. Help your child schedule a consistent time that will work best for them to complete their practicing. Let them choose between a morning or evening time and then help them stick to it.

3.    Listen to Music Together

Look for quality music and performers that you can listen to together. Regular listening improves artistic awareness and contributes to physical internalization of musical concepts. The more you listen, the more you will cultivate your child’s desire and commitment to playing a musical instrument.

4.    Encourage Through the Hard Times

Learning to play a musical instrument is hard work. Practice often feels tedious. However, the sincere encouragement of a parent can help children persevere through the challenges.

5.    Offer Helpful Guidance

Effective practice is all about repetition. If your child is having difficulty, help them identify what the cause is and encourage them to drill that part until they have it mastered. Then be prepared to endure hearing the same passages played over and over again to achieve mastery. Many children are motivated by the possibility of earning rewards for consistency and achievement!

6.    Be Your Child’s Biggest Fan

You don’t have to be a musician yourself to show unconditional support to your child. As you hear or see small improvements, a little praise goes a long way. Give them space to work alone when they need it, but continue to demonstrate genuine interest and support along the way.

7.    Promote Creativity

The path to musical proficiency requires practice, creativity, and time. No one becomes a skilled musician overnight. Don’t nag, but encourage your child to try new things – picking out a song by ear, creating their own tune, downloading a song from the internet and learning it. The more time they spend at the instrument, the more comfortable they will be. Let them have fun so that it’s not all work and no play!

It is an absolute delight to see your child play a musical instrument.
