In the piano pedagogy world over the last couple of decades, musician wellness has become an oft-discussed issue. And for good reason. I had numerous friends growing up who had to give up their piano playing and performance aspirations due to injury. I’m grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to learn from fabulous presenters and a teacher who were very aware of proper technique to help me avoid injuries in my own piano playing. As I get older (and begin to feel it more in my body!), I realize more and more the importance of overall health and wellness, and how those practices impact my time in the studio and at the piano. That’s why I’m incredibly grateful to my friend and colleague, Lisa, who introduced me earlier this year to The Balanced Life.
I have always been reluctant to participate in any kind of video workout, but after one late night session with Lisa going through the day’s Pilates workout, I admit I was hooked! I started my subscription the next week and have continued it all year long, with great results. The instructor behind the extensive online program is Robin Long and she does a fabulous job putting together simple but effective workouts that are updated every day in your dashboard and can be completed in 10-30 minutes. I actually look forward to each morning’s workout and it’s easily accessible on my phone. My core is stronger, my strength has increased, and I’m much more aware of how I use my body throughout the day, enabling me to avoid the tension and stress that would often creep in, especially while at the piano!
Membership is only open for a limited time unless you have a specific referral link (which also helps me earn some credit!), so I wanted to share this in case any of you are looking for some simple and effective solutions to improve the wellness practices in your life.
