In keeping with this year’s World of Wonder practice incentive theme, I planned our annual piano studio kickoff (a.k.a. September Surprise!) with a world theme. Even the parents had a great time putting their world knowledge to use as we played rounds of a game where they had to alternately identify a landmark (or its resident country) from a printed picture, answer a trivia question, or name either the composer or representative country of a piece of music by listening to an excerpt of it. The game was a super fun introduction to the year, and the students enjoyed participating in rounds of it in between their “surprise” performances of any piece of their choosing! Here are a few snapshots from the occasion:
Here’s the setup before everyone arrived. We split the group into two teams and the objective was to be the first team to color in all seven continents on their team’s world map.
One of the students colors in a continent after correctly identifying the location of one of the landmarks in the See-It! category of the game.
Everyone listens intently to a bluetooth speaker to try to identify the piece, composer, and/or country that the music is from for the Hear-It! category.
After the game, all the “surprise” performances, and the announcement of the World of Wonder practice incentive theme, everyone adjourned for a time of catching up around the cheese and chocolate fondue counter.
Can you tell they enjoyed it? 😉
And so begins another adventure-filled year of piano lessons as we learn and grow together in our musical skills!
