More About Apps at 88 Piano Keys

I recently came across another blog (with a super cool header graphic!) that has lots of info about apps: 88 Piano Keys. Even though I have an iPod Touch that I use all the time in my teaching, I’ve been pondering the possibility of getting an iPad at some point, too. Is there anyone out there who has both an iPod Touch/iPhone and iPad that they use for teaching? Are there any advantages to having an iPad specifically? Any things you really love about the iPad that can’t be done on an iPod Touch/iPhone?

  1. Hi Natalie,
I have both. In the group lesson setting, I use my ipad for a whiteboard app, as a game board (I’ve downloaded several from Susan Paradis’ site), for a staff background, watching youtube videos, etc. For the game board, you do have to be careful about what you use as game pieces – I use cute little erasers. My very young classes like to play a couple of apps on the ipad (Music for Little Mozarts, Flashnote Derby…). I use my iphone infrequently during group lessons.

In the private lesson setting, I use my ipad to take notes (Noterize) which get emailed to the student’s parents at the end of every lesson. So, while my ipad is in use, I use my iphone for iRealb (rhythm tracks), & recorded tracks from “American Popular Piano” that I’ve made from the CDs that come with the books. I also use the iphone with iLend to keep track of who has what books of mine, metronome apps, quick video-making to send right away to the students, voice recording of some parts.

I use both devices with great regularity. I never start a teaching day without both devices within reach.

  2. I have an iPhone and iPad. Since the iPhone is basically an iPod with phone features I thought I would respond. The thing that I find very valuable with the iPad is mostly the size. Because everything is bigger it just lends itself better for students to use. I use it for private lessons, lab time, group lessons, etc… I rarely use the apps on my phone anymore for students. It’s mostly for my needs. Like Beth, I always have both easily available and ready to go.

  3. Hi Natalie,
Thank you for checking out 88pianokeys and sharing it with your readers. I have a fascination with the iPad and I must say, size does matter. The iPad can morph into a worksheet, a white board, sheet music and more with a swipe and a tap. Plus it functions like a computer for watching videos, sending emails, taking video… It can not replace an iPhone or a laptop but can function quite close to both and offer so many engaging educational activities with incredible convenience…Best investment I’ve made in years…I could go and on…I appreciate you and your blog!
