Review and Giveaway of Titanic: A Voyage In Piano Music by Rebekah Maxner

2012 marks the 100th anniversary of one of the most tragic, but unforgettable events in history: the sinking of the RMS Titanic. The heart-wrenching story of the demise of one the grandest ocean-liner of its time has captured the imaginations of people for decades. Many have been inspired by the valiant sacrifice of the men on board, and thousands watched in fascination when its watery grave was discovered in 1986. Now, nearly 100 years after the fateful day, Rebekah Maxner has published a collection of books to keep the memory of the Titanic alive in the minds and hearts of pianists everywhere.

Titanic: A Voyage in Piano Music is available as both an elementary level piano book with optional duets and an intermediate level piano solo book. Each volume includes nine repertoire selections that “recount the tale of the Titanic’s one and only voyage: original music that captures the mood of the day, numbers that were performed for passengers by the hired White Star Line musicians, popular music that would have been played by Third Class passengers who had their own instruments, and music that was bravely played as the ship was sinking.”

As if this weren’t enough by itself, Rebekah has also included a variety of black and white photos from the Titanic and its passengers, and a paragraph of historical notes for each repertoire selection. The books are truly beautiful and will be loved by pianists everywhere!

Now…the moment you’ve all been waiting for. :-) Rebekah has kindly offered to giveaway two copies of these Titanic books to two Music Matters Blog reader. Just leave a comment below to be entered in a drawing to win one of these books for yourself or a special student! The giveaway will end at noon (CST) on Thursday, October 13, and the winner will be drawn using a random number generator.

  1. Oh my! I would LOVE to have these. My husband and I are avid Titanic history buffs, and this collection would be awesome to have in my music library.

  2. Oh, please! Pick me! I am a novice (generous) piano player who is looking for some music to capture the heart of my 3-year old budding musician. So far all I have played for her besides “The Wheels on the Bus” and “Here Comes the Bride” (? don’t ask) is “She’s Like the Wind” from Dirty Dancing. I have parts of it memorized and make up the rest. I am really curious about these beginner books, and would love to share them with my daughter. :)

  3. Always looking for musical themes that are relevant to students. Many of my second and third grade students study the Titanic Voyage in our school district. They talk about it at lessons. Branson, Missouri has built a huge building/boat to showcase the story and families love going there. Great idea to write music on this theme!

  4. Rebekah’s arrangements and original compositions are always fresh and appealing. I would love to add these to my library.

  5. These look like pieces I would enjoy playing and using with my students. The Titanic sank in April and I was born in April. Does that qualify me for being chosen? I am unsinkable though.

  6. Your musical ideas (plus others) give me all the more reasons to regularly check out your site. I’m never disappointed!
Please add my name to the Titanic giveaway. This year we are using the Mission:Music music journey and it has really enhanced student enthusiasm for practice and theory skills. Keep up the good work!

  7. Either one of these would be wonderful! The list of songs is so interesting. Thanks for the offer.

  8. Rebekah is an innovative composer who has written an excellent course for children! I have used some of her ideas to help my own students. I’d love to win these books. And, you, Natalie, always find great ways to promote other’s works! Thanks!

  9. I bought a rhythm game set from Rebekah which I really like. I’m sure she’s done an equally good job with this book. I’d love to win a copy!

  10. If you have any doubts about purchasing this volume, just go to youtube and have a listen. I cannot imagine a student not wanting to learn these and they are a great introduction to the sounds and images of the very early 20th century.

  11. These books sound like lots of fun. My oldest son was so intrigued by the history of the titanic. He even knows how many rivets were used in the building of the ship. I would love to use these with my students.

  12. I know my students would really enjoy trying out some of these songs (and the parents would love the fact that they are learning some history in the mean while!).

  13. Hi, Natalie, I’m not entering the contest, but I’d invite anyone who is interested to listen to the music in the books. I’ll try to attach the links. Besides these recordings we are working away at the YouTube videos.

  15. Would I love to receive this set for my studio and share the music with my students, yes! Plus the 13th is my birthday!

  16. Oh wow- that’s incredible – I have a young man who is taking piano from me right now- his favorite movie of all time is Titanic- he was so proud of himself -one of the first tunes he picked out was the flute melody from that wonderful movie. His name is Brett Heard (today’s his birthday!)- what a lovely surprise that would be!

  18. Your books are a really great way to introduce multiple keyboard learning skills and History to students in a very novel interesting way. It is something everyone is going to be talking about and many of my students are very excited about the pieces .
They sound really interesting and at the same time are not too difficult. Brilliant idea and a super collection of compositions . Makes teaching and learning a joy.
