Check Out My Latest Tech Toy!

Yes, it’s true. I am just now getting into the latest mobile technology. And really through no fault of my own. I’ve been contemplating the purchase of an iPod Touch or iPad for a while now, but hadn’t settled on which path to choose. The folks at YourVirtuoso.com made it easy for me. At the MTNA conference this year, one of the coupons in our little coupon book had info about their website with a link where you could visit and be entered in a drawing to win a free iPod Touch. I had completely forgotten about it until I got an e-mail last week saying that my name was drawn as the winner!

My beautiful 32GB, 4th Generation iPod Touch arrived at the end of the week and I’ve been in love ever since! :-) It’s been great fun exploring some of the available apps, synching it with my iTunes account, configuring all the settings, and using their new Facetime feature to chat with my sister across the country. So, so cool!

And now I’m trying to rack my brain and remember all the great apps that everyone has told me about over the past several months. Any suggestions? What are your favorite apps? Any fun music education ones that you like to use with your students? I can’t wait to put this to good use in my studio!

Share and enjoy!

  1. Congratulations on winning! I wrote a post about a year ago with a list of apps, but I’m sure that there are more that have been created since then! Find it here.

  2. I don’t own one (yet) but two apps I’ve seen and want to have are ‘just practice’ and the Mikey (I guess that one’s not really an app).
Have fun with your new toy- SO cool that you won it for free!!

  3. Congrats on your win. You will love the Metranome Plus Ap.
This is a must for all piano teachers. Enjoy

  4. Congratulations! Guess I missed that coupon at MTNA this year, but lucky you! You’ll find the Voice Memos built-in app to be useful in just making quick digital audio recordings of students to play back for them immediately. On the iTunes App Store, look up: Music Flash Class by Henry Flurry. You can also find a couple decent metronome apps for free on the App Store.

  5. Congrats!! For students – try Alfred’s “Music for Mozarts” app – very nice and cheap!!

  6. Simon’s Cat is fun and Rhythm Sight Reading is excellent. I also second the Music Flash Class and “Mikey” which I’m now experimenting with. I use these on my Iphone.

  7. So sweet! What a great contest to win. Yes, I’m sure you’re enjoying it. Does this make you want to develop a mobile version of your site? :-)

  8. Congratulations!! I bought the Ipod Touch last year, and I am saving up for the Ipad this year. It is so handy to have during lessons. I hope that Music Teachers Helper is going to make an app soon, so that we can sync our lessons and notes. My favorite music apps are: Just Practice, Music for Little Mozarts, Composer of the Day, Note Squish and MyLittleNote. I like Music Theory Pro, but have not used it with my students. Have fun, and remember how quickly 99 cents add up!

  9. One of my favorite apps, which I haven’t seen mentioned here is “Slow Notes”. It can access any song in your iTunes library and slow the tempo down as much as you wish without affecting the pitch. One of the biggest reasons I hear from students that don’t use their CDs at home is because they are “too fast”. This is a great app that combats that problem and it’s FREE!

Congats on winning! I’m sure you’ll love it and will come up with many many uses in your studio.

  10. Hi Natalie! I’m catching up on all of your blog posts! :) Congrats on winning an iPod!!! What a blessing!! Do you think you’ll still buy an iPad? Happy 4th! :)

  11. I’ve been looking into buying a tablet or something similar to use in my studio. I would like to be able to record video and watch it back right away, and then later upload to youtube. Would the ipod touch work well for that? I’m the most worried about sound quality, it doesn’t have to be professional, but I don’t want it to be really bad. I didn’t necessarily want to spend the money for a ipad, and had been considering a Samsung Galaxy tab but don’t know about the sound quality for that either. Is the screen big enough to get a good idea about how things look? Any other thoughts? Thanks!
