Piano Pedagogy Magazines

A reader sent me this question: Are there any good piano pedagogy magazines you could recommend (apart from AMT)?

The only other piano pedagogy magazine I subscribe to is Clavier Companion, which was birthed from a merger between the former Clavier and Keyboard Companion magazines. It is a fabulous publication! I don’t always keep on top of reading the articles (another project for summer, huh? :-) ), but whenever I do take some time to sit and read it, I find myself instructed and inspired.

This is probably exposing my ignorance, but I’m not even aware of any other piano pedagogy magazines that are currently available. That’s partly why I wanted to post this question. Do any of you know of other such publications? Or, really, any other magazines that might be of interest to a music educator, even if it’s not specifically piano pedagogy?

  1. Here are a few ideas:

The MTNA e-Journal – It’s a great supplement to AMT and features longer articles that go more in depth.

JRME – The Journal of Research in Music Education is the standard academic journal for music pedagogy. They often have articles related to piano teaching, and many of their articles on general music teaching and learning are applicable as well.

Music K-8 – http://www.musick8.com/ Music K-8 is a resource magazine for classroom music teachers. It’s not really a pedagogy magazine, but if you’re looking for new games and ideas for your studio, it’s worth a look.

  2. Music Educator’s National Conference publishes “Teaching Music” and “Music Educators’ Journal”, both geared toward classroom music education but there is lots of benefits in here for the private instructor. RCM Examinations (National Music Certificate Program in the U.S.) also publishes “Music Matters” a smaller newsletter publication (back issues are available at http://www.rcmexaminations.org/teachinfo/index.html) designed around the said examination system, but it is full of pedagogical ideas.

  3. Natalie,
I offered lessons during the month of June to my students and only 2 parents wanted to participate…..so I gave my entire studio the summer off. Families have so many activities and just want to take a break from “school” and the schedule. I think it is good for them and gives me time to do other planning and take care of projects that need my attention. Thanks for all that you do for us……Ruth

  4. Hi Natalie
There is a magazine called “Pianist”, published in England (which, I suppose, is why I can get it here in Canada). It is very good, talks about many pedagogical issues and always has free sheet music in it – Classical and pop music from beginner to advanced, plus finger exercises. A CD is included with every issue, containing these pieces. The website is http://www.pianistmagazine.com

Thank you, Natalie, for sharing your love of teaching with us all.

  5. While this isn’t directly a piano pedagogy magazine, I thought I’d mention it anyway. I have just begun subscribing to “Piano Explorer”. (http://www.instrumentalistmagazine.com/index_old.htm) It’s aimed at piano students and includes informative articles on the Composer of the Month, technique suggestions, quizzes, and online support and supplementary materials. I plan to distribute it to my students next year and implement it in my regular curriculum.
