What are you doing for summer?

Filed under: Piano Camp Ideas — natalie @ 6:11 am

With all this talk lately about summer and piano camps, I’m curious to know if anyone else has made plans yet. Are you doing anything different or creative? Anyone have a theme for their piano camps? Any great group activities or games you plan to use? I’ve just been collecting all my students’ summer schedule info this week during our evaluations and will start putting together camp ideas in the next couple of weeks. I’d love to get some more ideas from other teachers! Maybe we can brainstorm some ideas together! :-)

  1. I’m starting a summer piano “camp” on Friday mornings during June and July. I have 8 students ranging from brand-new beginner to PA level 2A ready to start! I am creating some cute games to use with them (that I’ll post on my blog as soon as I get a chance to breathe). But I would love to brainstorm ideas with some other teachers, as I’m not sure that I have nearly enough activities planned! :o )

I’ve been wanting to do a camp, but I think I will do that next year. This summer, I’m having some students work on duets with other students. Students who don’t want to do duets get to choose a style of music (jazz, pop, etc.) that we don’t ordinarily work on.

    Hi Natalie,

I am wondering if your parents ever ask you to make the camp day longer? As I mentioned in another entry, 2 hours is usually too short for my studio parents to want to make the trip to the studio, not to mention having to find other activities to fill the day. Unless of course, they are all homeschool children, it makes things easier.

    Thanks.

I use the Whirligig games for summer music fun. They make it easy to combine different levels. Each student will be listed on a chart, the goal being to achieve mastery with selected theory concepts. We have fun and they still make big advances in their theory skills.

My students also have an opportunity to sign up for different summer focus……….jazz and improv, composition, electric keyboard, etc. It is fun to be able to concentrate on an area of interest that we may not have enough time to pursue as much as they would like during the school year when we are preparing for competitions and exams.
