The internet is now very important and most people have access to websites. I think it is now more important than ever for each music teacher to have his or her own studio website to promote one's teaching services. For me, I found a very easy way to <a href="http://Squarespace.evyy.net/c/17953/6263/362" rel="nofollow">create a professional looking website in minutes</a>. I used it to create my own website http://www.opusmusicworksheets.com with no web programming experience at all.

Hi Natalie,
I'm a former piano and high school band/orcehstra teacher, and now am looking at putting up sites. There are a couple of free web based software programs that are exceptionally good and feature full. One is Wordpress. You can find tutorials for it online. The other is Drupal. It's an open source content manager system with all kinds of capabilities.

Web based programs and client based programs like Dreamweaver have their pros and cons. With the web based system, you can work on your site from any computer anywhere in the world (you can also keep it offline until the site is ready for the public). Dreamweaver and other client based content manager systems reside on your own computer and you can work on them from home before uploading the site to the hosting server. But they can cost a lot. Bluehost is also one of my favorite hosting companies.

If you want to save some money, you can host your own website. All you need is a permanent internet connection (eg ADSL), and a computer. Personally, I use an old computer - instead of throwing it out, I turned it into a simple web server, but you could just as easily use your own computer - it just needs to be left on all the time.

http://www.dslwebserver.com has all the information you need to get started.

I currently host two websites off my computer. It runs Windows XP and XAMPP, and uses zoneedit for the dynamic dns. Apart from my continued desire to play with it (eg swapping to linux, can't get it to work, changing back to xp) it'd work fine.

Dreamweaver is good, but expensive. Cheaper options are NVu, or learning HTML. Personally, I love code, so I just write in notepad, and preview in firefox.
